Apply for an LMIA

What is an LMIA?

The LMIA - Labour Market Impact Assessment -  is a crucial document issued by the Canadian Government to assess the impact of hiring a foreign worker on the Canadian labor market. The LMIA is required in most cases before a Canadian employer can hire a foreign worker.

When is an LMIA needed?

An LMIA is typically needed when an employer in Canada wants to hire a foreign worker for a position that is not covered by a specific exemption. It demonstrates that there is a genuine need for a foreign worker to fill the job and that no Canadian worker is readily available to do so.

How the Process Works

The most common process to hire foreign workers abroad is via Labour Market Impact Assessment - LMIA.

1

JOB OFFER AND LMIA APPLICATION:

The employer can apply for an LMIA both before or after the hiring process.

2

RECRUITMENT EFFORTS:

With our support, the employer will demonstrate efforts to recruit Canadian citizens or permanent residents for the position.

3

LMIA APPLICATION:

We submit the LMIA application, providing detailed information about the job, the efforts made to hire locally, and the impact on the Canadian job market.

4

ASSESSMENT AND DECISION:

The government assesses the application and analyst it, considering all necessary factors.

When the application is approved, you receive a positive LMIA, indicating that you can proceed with hiring a foreign worker.
5

WORKER RECEIVES THE JOB OFFER

Once you obtain a positive LMIA, the formal job offer is sent to the foreign worker and he starts the work permit application, with CanDo Immigration's support.

6

WORK PERMIT APPROVED:

With the work permit approved, the foreign worker receives authorization to work in Canada for the specified employer and position.

Processing Time

It can take 20 days to 4 months to obtain an LMIA, depending on the following factors:

  • First time applying for an LMIA
  • Business industry
  • Processing time for the foreign workers’ country of residency
