Candidates with the highest scores receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA) for permanent residence through regular draws.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Express Entry program?

The Express Entry program is Canada’s system for managing applications for permanent residence from skilled foreign workers. It uses a points-based system called the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) to rank candidates based on factors including age, education, work experience, language proficiency, and other adaptability criteria. Candidates create an online profile and enter a pool, where regular draws are held. Those with the highest CRS scores receive an Invitation to Apply for permanent residence. Express Entry is the main pathway for the Federal Skilled Worker Program, Federal Skilled Trades Program, Canadian Experience Class, and many Provincial Nominee Programs.

What is the Comprehensive Ranking System?

IRCC uses a Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) to evaluate, score and select candidates in the Express Entry pool. The CRS attributes points to candidates based on:

  • English and/or French language ability
  • Education
  • Work experience
  • Age
  • Adaptability (how well you are likely to settle in Canada)

Express Entry draws can be either for all programs or for one specific program. Candidates in the pool who meet the minimum score set for a draw will be issued an ITA and invited to apply for permanent residency.

When applying for permanent residency, you must also show that you have enough funds to support yourself and your dependents after you arrive in Canada, as well as provide proof of a clean police record in all countries in which you have resided and a medical record for all family members.

How long does the Express Entry process take?

The Express Entry process involves several stages with varying timelines. Creating a profile is immediate, but receiving an ITA depends on your CRS score and the timing of the draw. High-scoring candidates may be invited within weeks, while others may have to wait months. After an ITA, you have 60 days to submit a complete permanent residence application, which IRCC typically processes within six months. Overall, the process can take anywhere from a few months to over a year, depending on your eligibility, score, background, and documentation required.

How can I increase my CRS score?

You can increase your CRS score by improving factors that Express Entry uses to rank candidates. Key ways to boost your score include achieving higher English or French language proficiency, completing a higher education degree, having foreign credentials assessed, gaining more skilled work experience, securing a valid job offer, or obtaining a provincial nomination, which adds points. Spousal factors, such as their language skills or education, can also contribute to a higher CRS score.
