How to Get Permanent Residency in Canada After Study: Pathways for International Graduates

Written by Juliana Leal | Nov 21, 2025

For many international students, studying in Canada is the first step toward building a life in one of the most welcoming and diverse countries in the world.

From high-quality education to strong job prospects and an inclusive society, it’s easy to see why so many graduates want to stay and make Canada their permanent home.

Fortunately, Canada offers several clear and achievable immigration pathways for international students who wish to transition their temporary status to permanent residency (PR) in Canada.

In this guide, we’ll explain the main options and eligibility criteria for permanent residency after study in Canada.

Why Apply for Permanent Residence in Canada After Your Studies

Becoming a permanent resident of Canada is a major step toward long-term stability and opportunity for many international students. As a permanent resident, you gain the freedom to live, work, and study anywhere in the country, along with access to the many social benefits that Canadian citizens enjoy.

For international graduates who’ve already embraced life in Canada, applying for PR is a natural progression and a chance to turn a temporary experience into a permanent future in a place they’ve already come to call home.

Permanent residence also opens doors to broader educational and professional growth. With PR status in Canada, you can access a wider range of post-graduate programs, research opportunities, and career pathways that may not be available to temporary residents. You’ll have the flexibility to build your career with fewer restrictions and pursue further studies at domestic tuition rates.

Gain Work Experience with a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP)

After completing your studies at a Designated Learning Institution (DLI) - a university, college, or technical school approved by the Canadian government to host international students - you may be eligible for a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP). It’s always a good idea to confirm your school’s status on the official DLI list before applying.

A PGWP allows you to stay and work in Canada, building the valuable experience you need to qualify for permanent residency programs like Express Entry or Provincial Nominee Programs (PNPs).

The PGWP lets you work in Canada for a period equal to the length of your study program, up to a maximum of three years.

You may qualify for a PGWP if you:

  • Completed a program of at least 8 months at a PGWP-eligible DLI
  • Maintained full-time student status throughout your program
  • Apply within 180 days of receiving written confirmation that you’ve completed your studies
  • Held a valid study permit at some point during the 180-day period before submitting your PGWP application
The Canadian work experience gained through your PGWP can significantly strengthen your PR application, especially through programs such as Canadian Experience Class (CEC).

Beyond supporting your immigration goals, the PGWP gives you the chance to gain hands-on experience in your field, apply what you’ve learned in the classroom, and grow your professional skills, all while building a strong foundation for a successful career in Canada.

Pathways to Permanent Residency After Study in Canada

Whether you’re looking to leverage your professional skills, gain recognition for Canadian work experience, or align your career with the needs of a specific province, there’s an immigration program that can help you secure permanent residency in Canada after you graduate.

Federal Skilled Worker Program

The Federal Skilled Worker Program is designed for skilled professionals with foreign work experience who want to settle in Canada permanently. International students who have gained relevant work experience, either during or prior to their studies, may be eligible to apply through this stream.

Applicants must demonstrate at least 12 months of full-time, continuous skilled work experience (or an equivalent amount of part-time work) in a recognized occupation. Points are awarded based on factors such as education, work experience, language proficiency, and age, meaning that combining Canadian education with foreign or domestic work experience can significantly boost your profile.

The Federal Skilled Worker Program is ideal for graduates who want to leverage their professional skills and international experience to secure permanent residence and establish a long-term career in Canada.

Canadian Experience Class

The Canadian Experience Class is a permanent residence program tailored specifically for those who already have Canadian work experience. This program is one of the most common routes for former international students who worked in Canada after graduation through a PGWP.

To be eligible for CEC, you must have proof of Canadian work experience in a skilled occupation. But note that work experience gained during your studies can’t be used towards your CEC application. Work experience needs to have been gained after you graduated.

Applicants also need to meet other requirements, such as language proficiency, and should

plan to live outside of the province of Quebec.

Provincial Nominee Programs

Canada’s provinces and territories offer Provincial Nominee Programs (PNPs) that allow them to nominate candidates for permanent residence.

Each province selects candidates based on factors such as language skills, education, and work experience, aligning with their local economic and labour market needs.

Once nominated, applicants can apply for permanent residency through Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).

One of the biggest advantages of the PNP route for international graduates is that it can be easier and faster than many federal immigration streams, especially for those who have in-demand skills or job offers in a particular province.
