| Population (2004) 927,500 (source: www.world-gazetteer.com) | Description Nova Scotia (New Scotland) is one of Canada's three Maritime provinces, along with New Brunswick and PEI. It is almost completely surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean, only a small piece of land connects it to New Brunswick. Nova Scotia's key industries include natural resources (minerals, natural gas), agriculture and services. The seasons are all fairly mild due to the proximity to the sea. In the Winter, the temperature drops below freezing (-15 degrees celcius), but not as far below as other parts of Canada, and in the summer time, it is warm, but not hot (15-25 degrees celcius). Nova Scotia is covered in lakes and forests, and yet at the same time, you are never more than 56 km away from the Atlantic Ocean. | | Demographics
According to the 2001 Canadian census[10] the largest ethnic group in Nova Scotia is Scottish (29.3%), followed by English (28.1%), Irish (19.9%), French (16.7%), German (10.0%), Dutch (3.9%), First Nations (3.2%), Welsh (1.4%), Italian (1.3%), and Acadian (1.2%). Peoples of European descent thus make up approximately 96.8% of the total population. Almost half of all respondents (47.4%) identified their ethnicity as "Canadian."
