29,300 (2004) | Description Nunavut is Canada's newest territory (it split from the Northwest Territories in 1999). It is also Canada's largest (2,093,190 square km) and least populous. Nunavut is the Inuktitut word for our land reflecting in part the fact that 85% of the population of Nunavut is Inuit. The economy is based mostly on the harvesting traditions of the Inuit, although some rapidly growing industries include mining (especially for diamonds and gold) and tourism.
